Travel to Shimanami Kaido Cycling

After a great breakfast and taking a commemorative photo with the host couple of Minshuku (Japanese-style inn) Kontama, I checked out there.

The building is old, the counter is messy, they accept only cash payment, receive a booking only by phone, no Wi-Fi, no English.

Nevertheless, I will recommend this wonderful inn to our guests heading for Shimanami Kaido road.

I cycled for 30 minutes to the south for the Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture.

Many architecture fans visit Kagawa also and stay at Wakabaya.

I had sometimes introduced this museum to them, but this was the first time to visit for me.

As it was the museum of architecture, I thought that it exhibited architecture, but when I entered, their subject was the local people of the island, the life on the island, and the landscape of the island.

It was the place where we can see Omishima Island, where ITO Toyo is involved as an architect.

The last destination on Omishima Island was Oyamazumi Shrine.

I avoided taking many pictures in the sacred shrine.

The deity of mountain, sea, and battle is enshrined and gathered deep faith from the local naval forces and those in power at that time.

Plenty of offerings of samurai’s armors of around the 12th century are exhibited in the treasure hall (an admission fee of 1,000JPY / photo is prohibited).

I returned the bike to the cycle terminal next to the shrine and took a local bus.

We do not have to ride a bike all the way, and it is also a nice trip to take local transportation.

Changed to a highway bus for JR Fukuyama Station and headed to Kojima in Kurashiki City, Okayama by JR.

Here is Kojima Station.

Yes, this is a jeans town.

Cotton culture prospered from the 17th century in Kojima, and the textile industry flourished in modern times, then the first made-in-Japan jeans were born here after the war.

A short walk from the station brings us to Jeans Street.

There are many apparel shops dealing mainly in jeans products, some of which are directly managed by the jeans manufacturers.

I replace jeans almost every year.

Daily cleaning in the guest house and preparing bedding wears my jeans out quickly.

I have wanted jeans more durable but easy to move.

The first store I entered was BIG JOHN, a pioneering manufacturer of Japanese jeans.

The workmen actually use the old sewing machines lined up in the store.

They prepare a lot of stock, so we can try them many times while consulting with a clerk.

I bought a 15.5oz pair of jeans there.

Another store I entered was Momotaro Jeans, a relatively new Japanese jeans brand.

I bought a 14.7oz pair of jeans there.

I closed my four-day journey.

Half the travel expense was the two pairs of jeans.

I will wear them for a long time.
