Travel to Tomonoura & Takehara

Travel Journals

I traveled along the Seto Inland Sea for four days.

  • Day 1: Takamatsu → Tomonoura (Hiroshima) → Takehara (Hiroshima) → Hiroshima City
  • Day 2: Cycling Peace Tour in Hiroshima → Miyajima (Hiroshima)
  • Day 3: Cycling Shimanami Kaido Road, Innoshima Island → Ikuchijima Island → Omishima Island (Ehime)
  • Day 4: Omishima → Kojima (Okayama) → Takamatsu

Some of the guests of Wakabaya head for Okayama and Shimanami Kaido Road, and some western tourists go towards Hiroshima.

So, I decided to travel those areas by myself to bring my own experience to introduce to our guests.

I left Hanazono Station, the closest from Wakabaya at 6:28 in the morning, and arrived at JR Fukuyama Station at 8:56.

Seeing “Tomonoura”, the name of my first destination, I felt the beginning of my journey.

Arrived at Tomonura by Tomotetsu Bus.

The scent of the sea inspires us with the feeling of travel.

Planning the route of Tomonoura IN/OUT by public transportation, there is no way other than taking the same returning bus to Fukuyama Station.

However, when I tried it actually, the bus ride was only 30 minutes one way and runs enough frequently, so it was not bad.

But telling the truth, I wanted to enjoy the cruise between Tomonoura and Onomichi, which run only seasonally.

I wandered around the historical town in Tomonoura.

“Houmeishu” herb liquor seems a local specialty here.

Let’s try it!

The front side of the building is a store and the back is a brewery.

I tasted it, and was so delicious!

Despite my first destination on the trip, I bought Houmeishu liquor as a souvenir.

Now, I drink a shot of Houmeishu before sleeping.

Here is the great view of Tomonoura from Fukuzenji Temple.

I would like to see the sunset here.

Tomonoura prospered as a port waiting for the tide and the wind.

It is fun to take a walk in the small town to visit widespread attractions.

This is the Ota Residence, an old merchant house.

I intended to participate in a guided tour in Tomonoura, but it was unfortunately canceled due to Covid.

However, I could listen to the detailed explanations about the residence here from these pleasant guides.

A stroll is fun but not enough to find out the local depth without a guide.

There is accommodation, food, souvenirs, and a tourist information center in front of the bus stop, so it is well worth the stay.

After lunch, I went to Takehara via JR Fukuyama Station.

It is called Little Kyoto in Hiroshima and has a preserved historical area.

It was really a pity that the guided tour was canceled here again due to Covid.

Although the old houses are well preserved, streets are paved with stones, and utility poles are underground, I didn’t know anything about the town.

Along a shopping street on the way back to Takehara Station from the historical area, I stopped in front of a store, whose name was unreadable even for Japanese.

The old owner came out and told me how to read it.

“Chichibuya”

When I entered the store, it was a kimono shop.

The wife of the owner said, “We used to sell kimono so many, but now we just keep opening our shop.”

After having such a chat, I left Takehara by a highway bus for Hiroshima City.
