Little Pilgrim #88

Travel Journals

Hiking to Mt. Yashima developed to walking pilgrimage with my four-year-old son.

We started from Nagao Station where we finished last time after a 13km walk.
After praying at #87 Nagao-ji Temple and received a sign, we started to walk to the middle of the way to #88 Okubo-ji Temple.

Though Kotaro declared to give up at 3km point, tuna onigiri (rice ball) encouraged him again and we finally could reach the goal of that day.
This place is the last bus stop before entering to hiking path for Mt. Nyotaisan.

On the other day, 1st March, we came back to the bus stop by bus where we reached last time.
Once we try for Mt. Nyotaisan from here, we can no longer give up by bus.
We see off the bus with an indomitable determination.

We enter from the pavement to the mountain trail.

Both Kotaro and I prefer this trail to the road.

We walk along Kurusu Valley with the murmur of a stream.

Tuna onigiri fuels him.

At a peak before challenging Mt. Nyotaisan behind us.

Now, let’s try Mt. Nyotaisan!

We crawled on our hands and knees,

crossed a bridge for a pilgrim and

reached the climax at last.
A German pilgrim stayed at Wakabaya the other day.
It was the second time pilgrimage for him and told Kotaro and me “The final trail of the Mt. Nyotaisan is very tough.”
“Yes, this is what he said!”

Good job, Kotaro!
We climbed up Mt. Nyotaisan at 774m in height.

While we walk down to the south, we feel that the air changes warmer and can see the roof of the #88 Okuboji-Temple.
The founder monk “Kobodaishi” maybe thinks, “What a small lively pilgrim has come!”

We could reach the #88 Okuboji-Temple from our house at last with four-time-walking.
After praying there, we received the sign and calligraphy on the book (Nokyocho).

We stay at an inn for a pilgrim “Yasokubo” for a night.
Though I sometimes call them to make a reservation for our pilgrim guest, it is the first time to visit for me.

They kindly prepared a special dish for the child.
“We sometimes welcome family pilgrim with children but they take a car.
Maybe I hadn’t seen such a small walking pilgrim”, the owner says.

We left heading for #10 Kirihataji-Temple from Yasokubo the next morning at 8 o’clock and walked to 9km point, longer than I expected.
A four-year-old boy crossed the border from Kagawa to Tokushima on foot.
