ゲストハウスで予約しておいた自転車に乗って、いよいよアンコール遺跡群へと向かいます。
We headed for the Angkor ruins by the bicycles that we had reserved at the guesthouse.
夕日が綺麗というプノン・バケンに到着。すぐに遺跡に向かうかと思いきや、遺跡修復プロジェクトの説明を熱心に読みます。いろんな国が修復に関わっていることを知ります。
We arrive at Phnom Bakheng, where the sunset is said to be beautiful. I thought he would head immediately to the ruins, but he eagerly read the explanation of the restoration project. We learned that many countries are involved in the project.
バケン山を登って、山頂のプノン・バケン寺院（遺跡）に到着。残念なことに12歳以下は寺院に上がれないけど、いいのだ。満足。
We climbed Mt. Bakheng and arrived at the Phnom Bakheng Temple at the top. Unfortunately, those under 12 years old are not allowed to go up to the temple, but no problem. We are satisfied.
仏足石を祀る祠でお香を焚き上げて、お祈りをします。
We burned incense and prayed at a shrine dedicated to the Buddha’s foot stone.
シェムリアップ2日目。いよいよ、今回の旅の目立であるプライベートサイクリング遺跡ツアーのスタートです。ジャングルの中のサイクリングコースを、ガイドのパク・サンさんを先頭にして走り抜けます。
Day 2 in Siem Reap. The highlight of the trip, a private cycling tour of the ruins, started! Our guide, Mr. Park San, led us on a cycling course through the jungle.
念願のアンコール・ワット、ついに来たぜ！
We finally came to Angkor Wat, which Kotaro had longed to visit.
今回の旅に際して、アンコール王朝の歴史やインド神話について予習してきました。回廊に沿う壁面レリーフを目の前にしながら、ガイドのパクさんの説明を熱心に聞き、疑問に思ったことをどんどん質問すると、パクさんは全部丁寧に答えてくれます。パクさんも、幸太郎の知識と好奇心にびっくり。
On this trip, Kotaro did some preliminary study on the history of the Angkor Dynasty and Indian mythology. While looking at the wall reliefs along the corridor, we listened intently to our guide, Mr. Park’s explanation. Kotaro asked many questions and Mr. Park answered all of them in detail. He was also amazed at Kotaro’s knowledge and curiosity.
野生の猿がいっぱいいるのも気になるなあ。
“I’m curious about wild monkeys, too.”
遺跡建築の素材は砂岩とラテライト。触って質感を確かめます。
The materials used for building the ruins are sandstone and laterite. He touched them to check the texture.
楽しいけど暑さで疲れるから、お昼はクーラーが効いたツーリストレストランで。ここでのマンゴーシェイクの値段と、朝にローカル屋台で食べた朝めしとの値段を比べて「どひゃー」と驚きます。
It was fun, but the heat was exhausting, so we had lunch at an air-conditioned tourist restaurant. “Wow!” Comparing the price of a mango shake there with the breakfast we had at a local food stall, he was surprised.
タ・プロームの巨木が遺跡を飲み込んでいきます。「木が遺跡を壊していってしまうんなら、さっさと木は切った方がええんちゃうん？」と、幸太郎は考えさせられたようです。
The huge trees of Ta Prohm are swallowing up the ruins. “If the trees are destroying the ruins, shouldn’t we just cut them down?” Kotaro considers.
勝利の門をくぐって、これからアンコール・トムに入ります。ここを当時の人たちも通ったんだね。
Passing through the Gate of Victory, we were entering Angkor Thom. “This is where the people of that time also passed through.”
バイヨン寺院に到着。今はもう、上まで上がることができないけど、それでも圧倒される。幸太郎が「アンコール・ワットよりも、バイヨンの方がすごい気がする」と言うと、パクさんも「私もそう思うよ。バイヨンの方がアンコール・ワットよりもあとに造られているから、やっぱり、既にあるものよりもさらに立派なものを造ろうとしたんだよ」と説明してくれました。
Arrived at the Bayon temple. Now we can no longer go up, but it is still overwhelming. Kotaro said, “I think Bayon is more impressive than Angkor Wat.” Then, “I agree. Bayon was built later than Angkor Wat, so they tried to build something even more magnificent than what already existed,” Mr. Park explained.
夕方、ゲストハウスに帰ってきました。帰りのジャングルの途でぬかるみにはまってこけてしまって、靴がどろどろに。お宿でたらいとブラシと洗剤を借りて、自分で洗いました。
We returned to the guesthouse in the evening. On the way back through the jungle, he got stuck in the mud and fell down, and his shoes became muddy. We borrowed a washbasin, brush, and detergent and he washed them himself.
それでも、楽ちんなトゥクトゥクで周るツアーではなく、自転車にしたからアドベンチャーを楽しめたし、プライベートガイドにしたからパクさんに思う存分に質問ができて、ペースも合わせてくれたから、最高の1日になりました。
Still, it was a great day. We were able to enjoy the adventure because Kotaro chose to ride a bicycle instead of an easy tuk-tuk tour. Moreover, he could ask Mr. Park as many questions as he wanted and he matched our pace because this was a private guide tour.
