A Silk-Road Dream

Travel Journals

A month has passed since I came back to Japan from Uzbekistan.
Now I write about my solo journey for the first time in a decade.
I traveled in Uzbekistan for a week from 3rd November 2017.

Some guests of wakabaya tell me that they visit Takamatsu 高松 because that “Kafka on the Shore” by Haruki Murakami 村上春樹 is set in Takamatsu.
On a Korean Air bounding for Tashkent, I read that novel for the first time.

When “Nakata” and “Jonnie Walker” had a serious climax in the story, the Korean Air landed on the biggest city in the Central Asia.

I easily reached to a guesthouse by a local bus from the airport because I can read Cyrillic alphabet.
This was my first dinner: Lagman and Nan.

Lagman is a noodle in tomato-based soup with sheep meat and vegetables.
And it is very similar to udon, Takamatsu’s specialty.

I flew from Tashkent to Urgench: 1,000km west away.
A scary-looking security officer at the entrance of the airport ordered me to hand my camera.
He checked it carefully and took a picture of me!
He just wanted to try it.

I reserved and bought this domestic flight ticket in Japan on the internet.
Comparing to a journey during my school days, travel got so convenient.

I aimed for Ichan-Qala: a castle wall in Khiva with a Japanese backpacker (right) whom I met in the flight.
It was my best job during this journey that we jumped in a “difficult” local bus from Urgench Airport to the city.
And an Uzbek guy (center) helped us to find a car bounding for Khiva from Urgench.
He didn’t speak English at all however spoke French a little.

Two local old ladies turned over us from that guy and we could take this Marshrutka.
Yes! This is the travel without internet reservation!

A great castle wall welcomed us with sunset in Khiva.

Next morning, I went out for sightseeing in Ichan-Qala: one of the major touristic spots and the World Heritage.
I imagined how many tourists were there but most of them were local Uzbek tourists.
Local Uzbek people enjoyed taking a picture with Khanate of Khiva pay-costume for tourists.
I also enjoyed walking with relaxation.

I climbed up a minaret by step on these steep, dark and narrow stairs.
I guess some fall down.

Great view of Ichan-Qala inside from the top of minaret!
I had longed the Silk Road and Central Asia for two decades.
Now, I stand there!

This small photograph museum was so interesting for me.
These pictures tell us daily lives of locals in turbulent period when Khanates were forcibly annexed to the Russian Empire and modernized, finally sovietized.

Ichan-Qala is a great heritage, tourist place and popular photo spot for wedding.
I saw many couples and photographers there.

These men were dancing with surrounding their friend couple.

I bought pieces of bread, biscuits and a tea bottle for long journey to Bukhara.
