9月の島旅の続きです。
前回は志々島について書きました。
This is continued from the trip in Shishijima island in September.
志々島から戻ってきて、粟島に再上陸しました。
We landed on Awashima island again after coming back from Shishijima island.
粟島といえば、ここみたいです。
旧国立海員学校。
明治時代にできた学校で、校舎は木製のモダンな建物です。
残念ながら、この日は定休日で入れず。
This building is the landmark of the island.
The former National Sailor’s School
This school building was built in the Meiji era.
Unfortunately, that day we visited was its holiday.
この旧海員学校、現海洋記念館で12/14まで、AP通信の報道写真展、「世界五大陸の日常風景」が開かれています。
これは行きたい！
さらに、外国航路船員OBによる企画展、「僕らの思い出の国、思い出の港町」も合わせて開かれています。
周辺の島では漁師が多かったのに対して、この粟島は船乗りが多かったそうで、国内外の海を渡ってきた男たちの展示、期待できます。
A photo exhibition by AP titled “A view of daily life” is held now until 14th December at this former school, today’s Marine Museum.
Another exhibition by former overseas sailors titled “our memorial countries, our memorial ports” is also held now.
There were many fishermen on other islands, on the other hand, in Awashima island, there were more sailors before.
さて、粟島はレンタサイクルでまわるとします。
We go around this island by rent-a-cycle.
出た！大口しま子！
この大口しま子の口に500円を入れて、鍵が挿しっぱなしで置いてある自転車をお借りします。
この大口しま子を見て、この粟島への期待が高まります。
A girl named “Oguchi Shimako”; meaning “Island girl with a big mouth” in Japanese.
We put 500 JPY into her big mouth and took bikes.
レンタサイクルに乗ってお出かけ。
最初に見つけたのは、粟島藝術家村。
廃校になった学校を粟島藝術家村として、現在、アーティストが粟島に暮らしながらここで制作活動をされています。
The first stop is at Awashima Artists’ Village.
While living in Awashima, some artists create their original works here, a closed old school.
粟島の自然物を採集して、それを造形に。
また、ろうけつ染めをされている方も。
できあがった完成品を美術館で見るよりも、ここで制作過程を見ている方が僕にとってはおもしろいです。
One of them creates something with natural objects collected on the island.
Another creates batik.
I prefer to looking at their process here rather than completed arts in a museum.
有名な漂流郵便局。
開いてはいませんでしたが、外から中を少し、うかがうことができました。
なんともいえない雰囲気を醸しています。
行くべし。
The famous “Drift Post Office”.
It was closed when visited, but we could look at it inside a little.
It has some special atmosphere.
You should go there.

この島にはアートがあふれています。
それも、小難しい現代アートではなくて、島民による自作アート。
いっきに粟島が好きになりました。
This island is filled with arts.
Not difficult modern arts but handmade art by local people.
I love Awashima!
普通の民家。
でも、この民家のそばにはくじらがどうのこうのと、看板が置いてあります。
よく探してみて。

But a sign says “Look at the whale!”.
Try to find a whale.

さらに、反対側の瓦は、

And on the other side…
しっぽ。
粟島には気になるものが山ほどあります。

There’re many things to be on as mind!
粟島は瓦の原料になる土がとれるそうで、瓦を焼く窯もあります。
現役っぽい。
This is a kiln to burn clay to tiles, it’s on the active still now.
元は3つの島だったのが、海流の影響を受けて島と島の間に砂が堆積し、１つの島につながったのが粟島です。
なので、もともと別々だった島と島の間は細い砂浜が広がっています。
それに沿って、サイクリング。
気持ちいい。
Awashima was three islands originally.
These islands got tied into one with piled sea sand.
So, long and narrow sandy beaches go between formerly separated islands.
We enjoyed comfortable cycling along that beaches.
粟島でなんでも揃う、武内商店の入り口にて。
武内商店は品揃えがよくて、武内さんもすごくいい！

At Takeushi’s Store.
This store has various kinds of items and the owner, Mr. Takeuchi is also a good man.
