翌朝。
ホテル南国に「竜串観光汽船 グラスボート」の割引券があったので、行ってみました。
電話して、船長らしきおじさんを呼ぶと、「今日は出ない」との残念なお知らせ。
その理由。
たまたまこの日は、竜串海岸のサンゴを食い荒らすオニヒトデの調査をするため、船長自らが海に潜ることになっている、とのこと。
長年、やってきているそう。
最近よく言われる、「持続可能な観光」とはこういうことで、一見、目にはつかない地道な手入れが必要なんですね。
次来たときは、ぜひ、その美しいサンゴ礁を見るべく、おじさんのグラスボートに乗りたいと思いました。
The next morning, I visited the office of “Tatsukushi Tourist Glass Boat” with a discount coupon found at Hotel Nangoku.
The captain told me with an apology that he could not set sail that day.
He continued the reason.
He would dive into the sea to investigate the starfish which eats corals on the Tatsukushi coast.
It has been his life work.
Recently, sustainable tourism is getting common and it is always supported by such invisible and continuous attention.
I definitely will take his glass boat next time to see the beautiful coral reef he warmly maintains.

四国を巡っていた弘法大師が見残したと言われる、見残し海岸。
岬の尾根沿いをしばらく歩いて、展望台から臨みます。
写真では十分に伝わりませんが、これは弘法大師も、「あちゃー、見残してしもたー」と悔やんでもいいような、美しい風景が広がります。
This is Minokoshi Kaigan Coast.
It is said that a Buddhist monk “Kobo Daishi” missed that marvelous coast while he was walking around Shikoku for the ascetic travel.
I enjoyed the great view from the observation deck after walking along the ridge of the cape.
Although my poor picture can not move you enough, I understand that Kobo Daishi regrets having missed it.
展望台から海岸に降りてきました。
よく見ると、観光客が歩けるようにと、歩道があるのですが、わかりますか？
「セメントできれいに整備して、安全のために柵を造って」とはしていないところもまた、この見残し海岸に来るべきポイントです。
I walked down to the coast from the ridge.
Can you see the path for tourists on the coast?
It has but not made too safe without fences so that tourism would not change the natural scenery.
自然にできた奇岩の風景を、そのまま、堪能できます。
ただし、海岸に来るまでの山歩きも含めて、ちゃんと歩ける人にのみ、おすすめします。
You can enjoy the natural oddly-shaped rocky landscape as it is.
However, it is recommended only for those who can walk well in the mountain and slippery coast.

足摺海底館にも行ってみました。
50年近く前にオープンしたらしく、昭和感のある観光施設に見えます。
I went to Ashizuri Submarine Observation Tower “Ashizuri Kaiteikan” also.
It is opened about 50 years ago and honestly, looks old tourist place.
竜宮城に向かって螺旋階段を降りていくと、

海底！
実はこの写真を撮っているとき、大興奮なんです！
この写真ではまったく伝わらないのが残念。
いい意味で期待を大きく裏切られました。
こんなにも色とりどりの、しかも、見たことのないような魚たちがわんさか泳いでいるとは、思いもしませんでした。
これは見残し海岸と同じく、多くの観光客が見残しているのではないでしょうか。
透明度は20m。
遊子水荷浦の段畑のベストシーズンがまさかの冬だったのと同じく、ここ、足摺海底館のベストシーズンも冬なんだそうです。

Actually, I was really excited when I was taking this photo, sadly this photo may not excite you.
Ashizuri Kaiteikan was definitely better than expected.
I never imagined that we could see such colorful and unfamiliar fish (for me) were swimming there.
This might be missed by many tourists like the “Minokoshi Kaigan Coast”.
Winter is the best season to visit for high transparency.

案外、周辺観光情報が入手できた、ホテル南国。
おかげさまで、この漁船、もとい、観光遊覧船も見つけることができました。
当日でも電話予約ができて、ひとりからでも船を出してくれるのが、自由旅行者にはありがたいです。
Unexpectedly, Hotel Nangoku gave me much tourist information.
Thanks to them, I could find this fishing boat, no, pleasure boat.
It is easy for a free traveler that the captain accepts the booking on the day by telephone and is willing to take a boat tour even for a solo guest.
船長さんはガイドも慣れたもので、「若宮さん、ほら、そこの崖のところに洞穴があるでしょ」といった調子で、海からの足摺岬観光を楽しませてくれました。
船が小さくて、海では揺れるので、船酔いしやすいひとは要注意。
The captain is an experienced guide and satisfied me much with the great landscape of Ashizuri Cape.
Really recommendable but not for those who easily get seasick.

土佐くろしお鉄道 中村駅前にある、四万十市観光協会に立ち寄ります。
若葉屋に来られるお客さんでもよく、「四万十川へ行きたいんです」という声があって、でも一言に四万十川と言っても、全長200kmほどあるわけでして。
どの流域のどの地点で、どんな楽しみ方があるのか？
それを知るべく、四万十川マップをカウンターに広げて、職員の方にレクチャーしていただきました。
I continued driving from Ashizuri Cape to the Tourist Information in front of Nakamura Station, Shimanto.
Some guests of us ask me for tips around the Shimanto River but it is about 200km long.
At which part of the river and what kind of activities can a tourist enjoy?
I asked the staff for the lecture about activities along the river with a map on the desk.
河口に一番近くて、一番長い、佐田沈下橋。
こういう沈下橋が案外、何本も掛かっています。
Many “chinkabashi” bridges are on the river.
They are submersible at flooding.
GWなどはかなり渋滞するそう。
四万十川沿いの国道には細い箇所も多く、観光客の居ない冬の夕暮れ時でさえ、対向車に道を譲るために何度もバックをしました。
さらに、国道ではない道にチャレンジしてみたら、当然ながら、もっとやばかったです。
観光シーズンや、大きな車で四万十川へ向かうお客さんへは、注意をしておきたいです。
The roads along the river at Japanese holidays will be quite congested.
I also reversed the car several times at a narrow point to give the way for oncoming cars even in low-season.
Tourists who visit there by a big car or in high-season need to pay attention to driving.
観光遊覧船にも乗ってみました。
時間さえあれば、カヌーも体験してみたくなる、ゆったりとした川です。
I tried a riverboat tour.
If you have time, canoeing is also recommendable activity on this big calm river.

竜串、足摺エリアが予想外に面白くて時間がかかってしまい、宇和島城は見れませんでした。
残念。
でも、旅は行き尽くせないぐらいがいいですね。
これでまた、西四国に行く理由ができましたから。
I could not have enough time to visit Uwajima Castle because took much time at unexpectedly interesting Tatsukushi and Ashizuri area.
That is a pity but it gave me a reason to come back to the Western Shikoku again.
四国のゲストハウスとして、これからも四国各地の魅力を自分で体験し、旅人たちにご紹介していきたいと思います。
なによりも、四国での旅を楽しんでほしいですし、「四国、また来ます！」と言ってもらいたいですから。
I would like to experience unknown attractions in Shikoku by myself and introduce them to our guests as a local guesthouse in Shikoku.
This is because I hope the travelers enjoy their time in Shikoku and say “I will come back to Shikoku again!”.
