北欧はフィンランド🇫🇮、ヘルシンキの高校から先生お二人と学生10人のみなさんがご宿泊くださいました。
Two teachers and ten students from a high school in Helsinki, Finland, stayed with us.
若葉屋でのフィンランドからのお客さんは少なくて、毎年1件あるかないかぐらい。それが数日間、若葉屋の全4部屋がフィンランド🇫🇮一色になりました。
Finnish guests at Wakabaya are few, and maybe only one or two bookings a year. But for these days, all four of our rooms were completely occupied by Finns 🇫🇮.
この件は半年以上前に、私の母校である香川県立三木高校からお話がありました。ヘルシンキの高校生たちと三木高の高校生たちとの交流が3年前から続いていて、その宿泊先として若葉屋をご利用いただきました。
This reservation was brought over half a year ago by my alma mater, Kagawa Prefectural Miki High School. An exchange program between high school students in Helsinki and Miki High students has been ongoing for the past three years, and Wakabaya has been used as their lodging.
私がこの交流プログラムの何に驚いたかというと、そのストイックさ！ このフィンランド御一行、Finnair（フィンエアー）で14時間飛んで羽田で入国、JALで同日乗り継いで高松空港着、その日の夜には香川県木田郡三木町周辺でホームステイなのです（先生たちは若葉屋宿泊)。3泊のホームステイを終えて、学生さんたちも若葉屋に移って2泊。滞在中は三木高校と香川大学で交流、屋島観光、高松城跡から高松中央商店街、栗林公園へのまち歩き。以上です。若葉屋をチェックアウトしたら、その日のフライトで羽田へ、そして帰国🇫🇮。浅草や京都どころか、直島もなし！ なんとストイックな、完全なる国際交流プログラム！
What surprised me most about this exchange program was its sheer intensity! This Finnish group flew 14 hours on Finnair to Haneda, Tokyo, cleared immigration, then connected on JAL the same day to arrive at Takamatsu Airport. That very night, they began their homestays around Miki Town, Kagawa Prefecture (the teachers stayed at Wakabaya). After three nights of homestays, the students also moved to Wakabaya for two nights. During the stay, exchange activities at Miki High School and Kagawa University, sightseeing at Yashima, and a walking tour from Takamatsu Castle Ruins to Ritsurin Garden via Takamatsu Shopping Arcades. That’s it. After checking out of Wakabaya, they flew back to Haneda that same day and returned home 🇫🇮. No Asakusa, no Kyoto, not even Naoshima! What a stoic, utterly pure international exchange program!
先生がおっしゃるには「フィンランドの学生たちが国際交流するといったら、たいていはヨーロッパ域内で、暮らしとか文化とかそんなに大きくは変わらない。でも、日本はフィンランドと全然違う。その日本のごく普通の高校生たちと交流して、そのごく普通の家庭でホームステイする。素晴らしい経験じゃないか！」と熱い。さらに、若葉屋をチェックアウトされるときも「ホテルじゃなくてよかったよ。ゲストハウスに泊まれたから、学生どうしのコミュニケーションも活発にできた」と、若葉屋での宿泊も喜んでくださいました。
The teacher passionately explained, “When Finnish students engage in international exchange, it’s usually within Europe, where lifestyles and cultures aren’t that different. But Japan is completely different from Finland. To interact with ordinary Japanese high school students and stay with them in their ordinary homes—isn’t that a wonderful experience!” Furthermore, when checking out of Wakabaya, he expressed his satisfaction with staying at Wakabaya: “I’m glad it wasn’t a hotel. Staying at a guesthouse really helped the students communicate more freely with each other.”
我が家へのお土産に、ムーミンの反射板と、学校オリジナルのトートバッグをいただきました。ムーミンのむっつりした表情も、バッグのなんともいえない笑みも、じわじわきます。
As souvenirs for my family, we received a Moomin reflector and a school-original tote bag. Both Moomin’s sullen expression and mysterious smile on the bag grow on me.
