ついに、海を越えて講義依頼をいただきました。
Finally, I received a request for a lecture over the sea.
というわけで、瀬戸内海を渡りまして、神奈川大学みなとみらいキャンパスで講義をしてきました。
So, I crossed the Seto Inland Sea to give a lecture at Kanagawa University in Yokohama.
昨年、神奈川大学で観光を扱うゼミの学生たちと先生が香川を訪れ、その際にゲストハウス若葉屋をご利用いただきました。その縁があって今回、「観光行動論」という授業の中でゲスト講義としてお話をさせていただくことになったのです。ちなみに、その「観光行動論」のシラバスを読むとこれ、まさに私が全回受講したいようなとても興味深い授業です。
Last year, a group of students and a professor from Kanagawa University visited Kagawa for research on tourism and stayed at Guest House Wakabaya. After that chance, I was invited to give a guest lecture in a class on “Tourism Behavior”. Reading the syllabus of the class, it was so interesting that I would like to attend all the lectures as a student.
さて、事前に先生からは「バックパッカー」と「ゲストハウス」という2テーマをお題としていただいていました。さてどんな旅の話をしようかと、旅アルバムを引っ張り出してきて20年分の旅を振り返ってみました。ネタは山ほどあります。町に着いたらまずは歩いて宿を探すのに数時間、ネットカフェを見つけても文字化けして日本語が読めない、オートリキシャでぼられそうになって喧嘩する、現地で買った帰りのフライトチケットが手書き、など。しかし、こういう旅エピソードを話したところで、今やスマホにeSIMさえ仕込んでおけば、海外でもネット接続ができて宿もフライトもオンラインで予約ができるし、配車アプリでリキシャに乗れる時代の大学生からすれば、私の旅エピソードは「昔話」に過ぎないのです。
The professor gave me two themes in advance: backpacking and guesthouse. I pulled out my albums and looked back over 20 years of my travel to see what kind of travel stories I could tell. I have a lot of stories. For example, when I arrived in a town, it used to take me several hours to find a place to stay on foot, I found an Internet cafe but could not read Japanese because of garbled characters, I almost got ripped off by an auto-rickshaw driver and quarrelled with him, and the return flight ticket I bought locally was handwritten. However, these travel episodes are nothing more than “old stories” to a university student who can now connect to the Internet even abroad by installing an eSIM on his/her smartphone, book hostels and flights online, and ride a rickshaw with Uber.
いかん、いかん。
This is not good.
そこで、講義のタイトルはこうすることにしました。
So I decided to title the lecture as “A lecture for your journey”.
次の冬休みにでもバックパック背負って旅に出られるような、令和版バックパッカー養成講座です。約100分の講義と配布資料で、LCCの格安セールの見つけ方、Booking.comでのいい宿の見つけ方、トラブル回避策、おすすめアプリ、荷造りの極意、それにバックパッカーならではの旅の楽しみ方、例えばただひたすらに町を歩いてみるとか、地元民と同じようなメシを食うとか、今も昔も変わらない旅の醍醐味を伝えました。旅人が求める「非日常」と「異日常」の違いを考えさせる、講義っぽい話もしました。
This is a modern-day training lecture so that today’s students can start backpacking next vacation. In about 100 minutes of lecture and handouts, I shared how to find the best LCC deals, how to find good accommodations on Booking.com, how to avoid troubles, recommended apps, the secrets of small packing, and how to enjoy backpackers’ travelling, such as simply walking around town and eating the same food as the locals. The best parts of travelling are the same today as they have always been. I also gave a lecture-like talk about the “extraordinary” that backpackers seek.
また、ゲストハウス若葉屋については、ここが旅人が旅人を迎える宿であるというお話をしました。売上拡大や地域おこしには熱心でも、旅はしない宿が多くなっていることへのアンチテーゼを込めて。
Regarding Guesthouse Wakabaya, I also lectured that Wakabaya is a guesthouse where a traveler welcome travelers. This is the antithesis of some Japanese guesthouse that are eager to expand sales and revitalize the local community, but they do not travel.
この授業では私が一方的に話すのではなく、旅やゲストハウスについて学生同士でペアトークをする時間を設けました。また、質問が出やすいようにslidoを採用し、各自のスマホなどからの質問をオンラインで受け付けました。そのペアトークも質疑応答も、学生たちは意欲的で、もっと私のしゃべりの時間を削ればよかったと思うほどでした。講義後の課題としてオンラインで提出してもらうリアクションペーパーでは、お題を「あなたの旅の計画を書いてください（妄想歓迎）」としました。その後、集まったものを見ると、実在のフライトや宿泊施設を調べ上げて計画を立てている学生が多かった一方で、あえて行き当たりばったりで自由な旅を望む学生が今でもある程度いることに驚きました。いずれにしても、旅の計画を読むのはワクワクさせられました。
In this class, I did not give a one-way talk, but rather allowed time for students to pair-talk with each other. I also used slido to facilitate questions from their own smartphones or other devices. The students were so enthusiastic about both the pair talks and the Q&A sessions that I should have shortened my talk. For the reaction paper to be submitted online as a post-lecture assignment, I set the subject as “Write your travel plan (fantasy welcome!)”. Reading them afterwards, I was surprised to see that while many students had researched and planned their actual flights and accommodations, there were still some students who dared to travel haphazardly and freely. In any case, I was so excited to read their fantastic itineraries.
そして実は、この神奈川大学での講義そのものも、私と、幸太郎（9）、喜一（6）の旅でした。
And in fact, the lecture was also a part of the journey for me, 9-year-old Kotaro and 6-year-old Kiichi.
大阪でスパワールドと新世界。宿泊は天王寺のホステルで。
We played at Spa World and Shinsekai in Osaka and stayed at a hostel in Tennoji.
翌日は近鉄特急で名古屋に進んで、リニア・鉄道館。
The next day, moved to Nagoya for the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park.
さらに、新幹線と京急で妻の実家のある横須賀へ。横須賀のじいじ、ばあば、いとこたちと一緒に幸太郎の9歳のお誕生日会です。
We moved more to Yokosuka, where my wife’s parents live. It was Kotaro’s 9th birthday party with his grandparents and cousins there.
旅の締めくくりは、横浜乗車のサンライズ瀬戸で高松に帰ってきました。
We closed our trip with a sleeper train from Yokohama back to Takamatsu.
リアクションペーパーに書かれた、学生たちの旅の妄想が実現することと、またあちこちから講演、講義の依頼をいただけることを願っております。
I hope that the students’ itineraries will come true and that I will receive a request for lectures from somewhere again.
