A. 休館日じゃない？

美術館などのアートサイトは年中無休ではなく、定休日があります。

連休やメンテナンスなどの影響で変則になることもあります。開館カレンダーは必ず、確認しておきましょう。

Are they open?

Art venues such as museums are not open year-round and have regular closing days.

Naoshima: Closed Mondays
Teshima: March–November: Closed Tuesdays; December–February: Closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
Inujima: March–November: Closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; December–February: Closed

Closed days may be irregular due to public holidays or maintenance. Be sure to check the Open Days Calendar.

B. 事前予約が必要？

「ベネッセアートサイト直島」に含まれる直島、豊島、犬島のすべてのアート施設がオンラインチケット制を導入しています。
オンラインチケットを購入しなくても、空きがあれば当日に窓口でチケットを購入することもできますが、料金はオンラインチケットよりも割高に設定されています。
地中美術館、家プロジェクト「南寺」、豊島美術館などは日時指定の予約制です。
瀬戸内国際芸術祭の会期中や、連休、夏休みなどは早々に完売します。オンラインチケットを早めに事前購入しておきましょう。

Need a reservation?

All art facilities on Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima, included in ‘the Benesse Art Site Naoshima’, have introduced an online ticketing system.
While tickets can be purchased at the ticket office on the day if availability permits without prior online purchase, prices are set higher than online tickets.
The Chichu Art Museum, the House Project ‘Minamidera’, and the Teshima Art Museum operate on a date-and-time-specific reservation system.
During the Setouchi Triennale, long weekends, and summer holidays, tickets sell out very quickly. We recommend purchasing your online tickets well in advance.

C. 有料鑑賞ツアー

現代アートや建築、島の自然や歴史などを深く知りたい方は、有料の鑑賞ツアーがおすすめです。ツアー日程は改って決まっていて、要予約。最少催行人数は概ね2人です。

Join the paid tour

For those who understand Japanese and wish to learn about the island’s contemporary art, architecture, and history, we recommend paid guided tours. Tour schedules are fixed, and advance booking is required. Guides are available in Japanese only.

D. 船乗り場に注意

宇野港。フェリー乗り場と小型旅客船乗り場は離れている。Uno Port. The ferry terminal and the small passenger boat terminal are separate.

船には2種類あります。

フェリー　車も載せられる大型の船
高速艇・旅客船　徒歩客しか乗せられない小型の船

船の構造も大きさも全く異なるため、乗り場は別々で、100m以上離れていることがあります。島旅をする方は出航時間と行き先だけでなく、船の種類と乗り場を事前確認しておきましょう。

Check the boarding pier

There are two types of ships.

Ferries: Large vessels that can carry vehicles.
High-speed boats/passenger boats: Smaller vessels that can only carry passengers on foot.

As the vessels differ entirely in both structure and size, their boarding points are separate and may be over 100 metres apart. Travellers to the islands should check not only departure times and destinations but also the type of vessel and boarding point in advance.

E. 高松〜豊島の船に注意

高松・豊島間の船は「豊島フェリー」という名前ですが、船はフェリーではなくて高速艇です。自転車やバイク、自動車は載せられません。さらに、曜日や季節によって運航ダイヤが変わります。すごくわかりにくいです。間違いなく確認しておきましょう。

Tricky Teshima boats

The vessel operating between Takamatsu and Teshima is called the “Teshima Ferry”, though it is not a ferry but a high-speed boat. It cannot carry bicycles, motorcycles, or cars. Furthermore, the timetable changes depending on the day of the week and season. It is extremely confusing. Be sure to check carefully.

F. 岡山・宇野港も便利

JR宇野駅

直島と豊島は高松港からよりも、岡山の宇野港からの方が近く、船の本数も多いです。宇野港とJR宇野駅は至近。

島へのアクセス

Accessible from Okayama also

Naoshima and Teshima are closer to and have more frequent vessel services from Uno Port in Okayama than from Takamatsu Port. Uno Port is close to JR Uno Station.

G. 犬島へは岡山からも

高松〜犬島間は直行便がありません。直島か豊島で船の乗り換えをして、高松〜犬島間で片道3,000円以上かかります。
岡山の宝伝港〜犬島は片道400円で、船の本数は直島・豊島〜犬島よりも多いです。
3月から11月までは、JR岡山駅駅〜宝伝港間に臨時バスが運行されます。運行日は犬島精錬所美術館が開館している金、土、日、月曜日。一日一往復。所要約1時間。片道880円。

Visit Inujima from Okayama

There are no direct services between Takamatsu and Inujima. You must transfer ferries at Naoshima or Teshima, with the Takamatsu–Inujima leg costing over 3,000 JPY one way.
The fare from Hōden Port, Okayama, to Inujima is 400 JPY one way, with more frequent sailings than from Naoshima or Teshima to Inujima.
From March to November, a temporary bus operates between JR Okayama Station and Hōden Port. It runs on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays when the Inujima Seirenjo Art Museum is open. One return trip per day. Journey time approximately 1 hour. One-way fare: 880 JPY.

H. 島で泊まってみる

高松と島とを何度も往復するよりも、島から島へと直接、渡ったほうが時間と船代を節約できます。本数は多くないですが、小豆島〜豊島、豊島〜直島は直行の船があります。

島へのアクセス

直島にはゲストハウスや民宿が多くお手頃価格で宿泊できます。Booking.comなどの予約サイトに掲載されていない宿も多いので、観光協会のページで探してみてください。

直島町観光協会

島で宿泊すれば、多くの旅行者が高松や宇野へ帰ったあとの静かな島時間を楽しめます。さらに、直島であれば地中美術館のオープンスカイ・ナイトプログラムや、ベネッセハウスミュージアムのギャラリーツアーなどの、夕方限定の鑑賞ツアーも時間を気にすることなく楽しめます。

Stay overnight on the island

Rather than making multiple return trips between Takamatsu and the islands, travelling directly from island to island saves both time and ferry fares. Although services are infrequent, direct ferries operate between Shōdoshima and Teshima, and between Teshima and Naoshima.

Access to the Islands

Naoshima offers many guesthouses and minshuku (traditional guesthouses) at affordable prices. Many of them are not listed on Booking.com, so please search the tourism association’s website.

Staying overnight on the island allows you to enjoy the tranquil island pace after most travellers have returned to Takamatsu or Uno. Furthermore, staying on Naoshima means you can fully enjoy evening-only viewing tours, such as the Chichu Art Museum’s Open Sky Night Programme or the Benesse House Museum’s Gallery Tour, without worrying about the time.
