Produce moderately.

Owner's Works

Produce not too much.

Work not too hard.

Still, it goes well.

“Produce moderately.” by KAI Kaori, 2019

I read this book to reconsider what “moderately” means while our sales do not reach the moderate level due to COVID-19.

By the way, even though our sales drop sharply, still it goes well with some nice public support, so don’t worry.

Now, the book introduces some business cases that do it well without too much production or too much hard work.

The reason why I feel the book cheers me might be that my working style is also “produce not too much, work not too hard, still it goes well”.

After graduation, I worked as a salesperson at a wholesale company selling machinery and tools.

Since I was a salesperson, monthly sales goals of tens of millions of yen were set.

However, I could not be motivated to meet the quota by selling more than last year and rising sales amounts.

On the other hand, since opening Guest House Wakabaya seven years ago, I have analyzed sales, the number of guests, occupancy rate, etc carefully.

The book tells,

He says the goal of business is not sales. Our goal is to please our customers. Sales are just like a thermometer that shows the results.

Yes, the sales, the number of guests, and the occupancy rate are like a thermometer for Wakabaya.

The customer’s review score is the clearest thermometer for hotel managers.

I think it ridiculous to set the goal to increase the review score.

What should we do?

By the way, the busiest year for Wakabaya was 2016.

The number of visitors from abroad to Kagawa was growing dramatically, the number of supplied guests rooms was more than 1,000 less than now, and the Setouchi Triennale (art festival) was held at that time.

Wakabaya was full almost every day for months, and I worked hard and earned much.

At last, tonsillitis due to the overwork caused a sudden high fever and I fell down three times.

It is ironic that I had not gotten ill through overwork when I was a salesperson, but I did it after becoming a guesthouse host without any quota.

Maybe I did not have to work so hard and earn so much at that time while our children were still small.

I got the opportunity to change our business style and room rates during the pandemic.

However, even if the pandemic is over and we welcome travelers from over the world again, we might keep the current style.

With watching thermometers.

Still, it goes well.
