個室の腰壁部分の板は、低い位置にあるため、どうしても荷物などが当たりやすく、傷が多くなってきました。
そこで、春休みも終わり、少し落ち着いたところで、お宿をお休みにして塗装工事に入ってもらうことに。

まずは今後、傷がつきにくくするための保護塗料を施したあと、弁柄（べんがら）と柿渋（かきしぶ）を塗っていきます。
これで、傷の部分だけ表面が彫れて白く見え、痛々しかったのが、ずいぶんと見えにくくなりました。

塗装屋さんに塗料のことをいろいろ、教えてもらうと、弁柄は鉱物そのもの、柿渋はあの、果物の柿から抽出したものとのこと。
化学塗料ではない、自然塗料なのでイヤなにおいがありませんし、むしろ、柿渋には消臭効果もあるそう。
The painter told me that “bengara” is “Red Iron Oxide” and “kakishibu” is the fermented juice of astringent persimmons.
Those natural paints don’t emit a bad chemical smell, they even deodorize.
この板はもとは、若葉屋が建つ前にこの地にあった古民家の、天井板として使われていた杉板です。
戦前から使われてきたこの杉板は、こうやって少し手を加えることで、また長く、使うことができます。
These cedar boards had been used as sailings at the old house which stood on today’s wakabaya’s land.
We can continue to use them further ahead by such small maintenance.
