瀬戸内国際芸術祭（瀬戸芸）を目指して来られるお客さんを毎日、お迎えしておきながら、私自身はまだ行ったことがありません、でした。
ついに今日、初めて、瀬戸芸に行ってきました。
I hadn’t gone to the Setouchi Triennale even though I welcome many guests heading there every day.
At last, I did it for the first time!
行き先は、これまた、行ったことのなかった島、大島です。
なぜ行ったことがなかったかというと、高松港から近いにもかかわらず、すごく行きにくい島だからです。
大島は、島全体が国立のハンセン病療養所となっていて、大島へ渡る船も官有船で、普通の旅客船のようには乗ることができません。
Our destination is Oshima Island, where we hadn’t landed.
This is because Oshima is difficult to reach.
While the island is a national sanatorium of Hansen disease and we cannot take its government ship like other passenger boats.
それが、芸術祭期間中は当日整理券を受け取ることさえできれば、大島へ渡ることができます。
乗る船は官有船ではなくて、海上タクシー。
普段は釣り客が乗るであろう、小さな船です。
瀬戸内のどこにでもある感じの小島が見えてきました。
Only during the Triennale, we can go to Oshima every day just if we can get a ticket.
This tiny boat takes us to an island, which looks like neighboring other small islands.
大島、上陸。
するとまもなく、案内板が現れます。
納骨堂、盲人会館、不自由者等、食堂、火葬場などの文字。
瀬戸内のどこの小島とも違うことに、気付かされます。
But once we land there, we know that Oshima is completely different from other islands.
This guide board shows a charnel house, blind’s house, disable’s house, dining room, and crematory…
大島は、瀬戸芸を支えるボランティア、「こえび隊」によるガイドで巡ります。
9:40着の便で大島に着いたので、11:10発の便で大島を離れます。
We tour the island with a volunteer guide and other visitors who took the same boats.
Our tour started at 9:40 and would finish at 11:10.
大島についてまず、気になるのが、あちこちで流れる音楽。
何かと思うと、これはハンセン病の後遺症で目が不自由になった入所者の方たちが、島内を歩きやすいようにするためのものだそう。
道路の真ん中に引かれた白線は弱視の方が見やすいように、道路脇のガードレールは、杖で叩きながら歩けるように。
When we walk around the island, we notice a sound from somewhere. This sound is for visually disabled people caused by Hansen disease.
The guardrail is also helpful for them while they walk with sticks and the white center line is for weak-sight people.
モニュメント「風の舞」の後ろには、桜が綺麗に咲いていました。
故郷とも縁をなくした入所者の方たちはこの島で一生を終え、その遺骨がここに納められています。
せめて死後は、風にのって自由に、との思いが込められています。
Cherry blossoms bloomed behind the monuments named “Kaze no mai – dance of wind”.
Remains are buried here.
They lost any relationship even with their family, home and ended their lives only on the island.
These monuments were built in wish that their soul would be free like the wind at least after death.
ハンセン病患者を隔離してきた「らい予防法」が廃止されたのは1996年、なんと今からわずか20年前のことなのです。
It was 1996, just 20years ago that the Hansen Disease Prevention Law was abolished in Japan.
This law had isolated the patients to sanatorium forcibly on wrong knowledge and discrimination.
島内には「やさしい美術プロジェクト」が展開されていて、他の島での現代アートとはまた違った展示が行われています。
“Yasashii Bijutsu Project- Heart-warming Art Project” is on Oshima and they’re also different exhibition from modern arts in other islands.
先日、大島へ行かれたあるお客さんは、「涙が流れました」と感想を言ってくれました。
大島へ行っても、直島や小豆島などと違い、楽しい思いはしません。
それでも、知っておくべきことがあって、それを実際に上陸して知り、考えてみたいという方は、ぜひ、行かれることをおすすめします。
A guest who visited Oshima told me that she had cried there.
You cannot feel happy there.
But, there is what we must know in Oshima and if you’d like to witness it by your own eyes, you must visit there.
