（病状は回復して退院され、ご家族からの承諾も得ましたのでブログ記事に残すことにしました。）
(Now that he has recovered and been discharged from the hospital, and with his family’s consent, I am recording this incident in our blog post.)
ゲストハウスを営んで11年。本当にいろんなことがありました。しかし、ゲストハウスオーナーとして救急車に乗ることになるとは思いませんでした。さらには高松空港から国際医療ジェット機でお客さんをお見送りする日が来るとは夢にも思いませんでした。
We have been running the guesthouse for eleven years. I have experienced many things. However, I never imagined that, as a guesthouse owner, I would be riding in an ambulance. Nor did I ever imagine that I would see our guests off on an international medical jet at Takamatsu Airport.

8月に、台湾の親子3世代、総勢14人の大家族からご宿泊予約が若葉屋に入っていました。チェックイン日当日は岡山空港から入国されて、そのままレンタカーで若葉屋に到着されました。しばらく休業していた若葉屋にとって、この久しぶりのチェックインはそれはそれはにぎやかで楽しいものとなりました。
We received a reservation from a Taiwanese family who would like to stay at Wakabaya in August. There were fourteen people in the family, spanning three generations. On their arrival day, they landed at Okayama Airport and arrived at Wakabaya in the evening by rental car. It was a great pleasure for Wakabaya, which had been closed for months, to host them.
翌日、70代のお父さんが発熱していると家族から呼び出しがありました。午前中に病院を受診し、処方された解熱剤を飲んでも熱は上がったままで、さらに血圧が低下。「救急車を呼んでほしい」と、家族が私を呼びに来たのが夕方のこと。私は慌ててサンダルのまま宿を飛び出しました。救急車が到着し、救急隊員の要請で私が通訳としてそのまま救急車に乗り込んで病院まで付き添うことになりました。日本では初めて、救急車に乗りました（セネガルでは乗せられたことがある）。
The following day, the family called me to say their father, in his seventies, had developed a fever. He visited the hospital that morning, however, even after taking a fever reducer, his temperature remained elevated, and his blood pressure dropped. It was evening when the family came to fetch me, saying, ‘Please call an ambulance for him!’ I hastily left home in my slippers. The ambulance arrived, and at the paramedics’ request, I accompanied him and his daughter in the ambulance to the hospital as an interpreter. It was my first time riding in an ambulance in Japan (though I had been taken in one in Senegal).
搬送された病院で詳細な問診と血液検査がされました。その検査結果を見た医師の表情が変わったのがわかりました。実はこのお父さんの娘さんは台北で看護師をされていて、彼女もその検査結果が何を意味しているか、すぐに理解されているようでした。そのまま入院となり、私も入院手続きのお手伝いをすることになりました。私が自宅に戻ってきたのは21時過ぎでした。
At the hospital where he was taken, a detailed medical history was taken and blood tests were conducted. I could see the doctor’s expression change upon seeing the test results. The patient’s daughter, who works as a nurse in Taipei, too seemed to understand immediately what the test results signified. He was admitted to hospital straight away, and I helped them with the admission procedures. I returned back home after 9 pm.
翌日。お父さんの病状は急速に悪化。前日の病院から、さらに高次の病院へ救急搬送されたと家族から連絡がありました。不安と混乱の表情の家族と一緒に、私も搬送先の病院へ同行することにしました。お父さんはICU（集中治療室）で治療中とのことでした。家族控室で医師と家族の間に私が座り、医師から述べられる深刻な状況について私が通訳し、それを家族が涙しながら聞いていました。
The next day. Their father’s condition worsened rapidly. The family informed me he had been transferred by ambulance again from the previous hospital to a higher-level one. Seeing how distraught they were, I decided to accompany them to the hospital again. Their father was being treated in the ICU. I sat between the doctor and the family in the waiting room. The doctor explained the serious situation, which I interpreted, and the family listened with tears in their eyes.
その後も、日に日に病状は悪化していきました。本来であれば、若葉屋で2泊されたあと、琴平、鳥取、岡山などをめぐる予定の6泊7日の訪日旅行は、すべて高松の若葉屋で足止めになってしまいました。何か月も前から、きっと大家族でわいわい、わくわくしながら旅の計画を立ててきたはずです。それがまさか。家族の心情はどれほどのものだったでしょうか。実は我が家も、ちょうどその頃に沖縄へ6泊7日の旅行に行くことにしていました。しかし、事態が重大で予断を許さない状態だったので急遽取りやめました。沖縄へはまた今度、行けばいいのです。
After that, his condition worsened day by day. They had originally planned to stay at Wakabaya for two nights before continuing their five-day journey to Kotohira, Tottori and Okayama. However, they ended up spending the whole time in Takamatsu. They must have been so excited to make travel plans for months beforehand. And yet, how could this have happened? How exhausting it must have been for the family. Actually, our family had also planned a 7-day trip to Okinawa at that time. However, the situation was serious and unpredictable, so we decided to cancel it immediately. We can go to Okinawa another time.
それから数日後。娘さんから連絡があり、事態が急展開。台湾から医療チームが高松の病院にやって来て、医療ジェット機で台北の病院へ救急搬送することになったと言うのです。高松の病院を退院し、国際搬送する日。私も家族に頼まれ、一緒に病院へと向かいました。通訳をしながら、病院での退院手続きのお手伝いをしました。一方、高松、台湾、双方の医療チームでは打ち合わせが既になされていました。数日前はとても固かった医師の表情は幾分和らいでいて、お父さんの病状がようやく回復に向かい始めたという報告でした。医師から渡された最新の検査結果を見ていた娘さんも「今日になって初めていい知らせを聞いた」と笑顔でした。医師からは私に対しても「あなたも大変でしたね。助かりました」と、労をねぎらってくださいました。
A few days later, the daughter contacted us with a sudden turn of the situation. She said that a medical team from Taiwan would come to the hospital in Takamatsu to airlift her father by medical jet to a hospital in Taipei. On the day their father was discharged from the Takamatsu hospital for international transport, I was asked by the family to accompany them to the hospital. I helped with the discharge procedures while also serving as an interpreter. Meanwhile, consultations had already taken place between the medical teams of Takamatsu and Taiwan. The doctor’s expression, which had been very severe a few days prior, had softened somewhat. The latest medical report indicated that their father’s condition had finally begun to show signs of recovery. The daughter, looking at those medical results, smiled and said, ‘This is the first good news I’ve heard here.’ The doctor also spoke to me, ‘We appreciate your cooperation.’
ICUでは何本ものチューブや機器につながったお父さんのまわりを、日本語、英語、中国語が飛び交って日台の医療チームが慌ただしく搬送作業を進めています。そしてついにストレッチャーを車輌に乗せ込み、病院を出発というときに搬送チームから「通訳さんも一緒に！」と言われ、私もそのまま空港へ。見慣れたいつもの高松空港には、見たことのない小型ジェット機が駐機していました。空港職員や搬送チームが慌ただしく動くのが見え、お昼すぎに離陸しました。
In the ICU, Japanese, English and Chinese flew thick and fast around their father, hooked up to numerous tubes and machines, as the Japanese and Taiwanese medical teams hurriedly prepared for transport. Finally, as the stretcher was loaded onto the vehicle and we were about to leave the hospital, the transport team called out, ‘The interpreter, please come with us!’. At our familiar Takamatsu Airport, a small jet I’d never seen before was parked. Airport staff and the transport team bustled about, and the small jet took off after midday.
同日夕方には台北に着陸、無事に転院が完了したと連絡がありました。さらに今では退院し、経過観察とリハビリ中とのことです。
That same evening, we were informed that he had landed safely in Taipei and the transfer to the hospital had been completed. Furthermore, he has now been discharged and is undergoing follow-up observation and rehabilitation.
今回の件で超異例な対応をしてくださった高松の病院、搬送チーム、台北駐大阪経済文化弁事処、中華民国留日四国華僑総会、高松空港、台中からの航空医療搬送チーム、台北の病院、さらに私の長時間不在と沖縄旅行キャンセルを呑んでくれた我が家の家族、ついでにこれまで私に英語を教えてくれた先生方にも感謝申し上げます。ありがとうございました。
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the hospitals in Takamatsu, the transport team, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Osaka, the Association of Overseas Taiwanese in Shikoku, Takamatsu Airport, the air ambulance team from Taichung, and the hospital in Taipei for very unusual assistance. ところで、この台湾のご家族は台湾中部の山あいの小さな町でお茶農家をされています。我が家の双子たちが旅行に出られるようになったら、是非ともこのご家族を訪ねようということになっていて、我が家も台湾のご家族もわくわくしているところです。
By the way, this Taiwanese family runs a tea farm in a small town in central Taiwan. We’ve decided that once our twins are old enough to travel, we’ll definitely visit them, and both our family and the Taiwanese family are very excited about it!
