若葉屋にはよくツーリングのお客さんが来られます。祖谷のかずら橋や四国カルストなどのツーリングスポットまでのルートを尋ねられては、若葉屋の本棚からツーリングマップルを取り出してルートのおすすめをしてきました。
Many touring guests stay in Guest House Wakabaya. When they ask me about the route to popular destinations such as the Vine Bridge in Iya and Shikoku Karst, I always recommend them the better one with a touring map.
しかし何を隠そう、私自身は四国をバイクで走ったことがなかったのです。2014年の若葉屋開業から8年。ついに、四国ツーリングを決行しました。
However, to be honest, I had never ridden a motorbike in Shikoku. Eight years have passed since Wakabaya opened in 2014. Finally, I rode a motorbike in Shikoku.
私はバイク免許は持っていて10年ほど前、青年海外協力隊だったときにはほぼ毎日、バイクに乗っていました。セネガルの荒野で。帰国後はバイクを持っていないので乗ることもほとんどありませんでした。
I have a motorcycle license, and when I was a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer 10 years ago, I used to ride a motorcycle every day in the wilderness of Senegal, west Africa. Since I didn’t have a motorcycle after returning to Japan, I had not ridden one.
というわけで、まずはバイクをレンタルするべく、JR高松駅から特急いしづちに乗って香川県西部の観音寺（かんおんじ）駅へ。駅で待ってくれていたのは、バイクの販売、整備、レンタルなどを手掛けるフルスロットルさんです。この駅送迎はありがたいサービスです。
So, at first, I took the train to Kanonji in the west of Kagawa to rent a motorcycle. A staff of “Full Throttle“, a motorcycle rental company picked me up at the station.
2泊3日でお借りしたのはカワサキのNinja ZX-25R。ちなみに、手に持っているのはこれまたサービスでいただけるカップラーメンです。ありがたい。
I rented a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-25R for 3 days. By the way, what I have in my hand is a Cup Noodles they gave me.

Here is the route of my Shikoku Touring.
最初の目的地は徳島県美馬市脇町のうだつの町並みです。吉野川沿いに藍、養蚕、タバコ葉の一大集積地として栄えたこの地区を、ボランティアガイドさんの案内で巡りました。
The first destination is the Udatsu townscape in Wakimachi, Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture. Guided by a volunteer guide, we toured this district, which prospered along the Yoshinogawa River as a major collection center for indigo, sericulture, and tobacco leaves.
「うだつが上がらない」の「うだつ」とは、この家々の1階の屋根と2階の屋根の間に、隣家とを隔てて設けられた漆喰壁のこと。火災の延焼を防ぐためのうだつは、その家の富を誇示するように装飾が施されていきました。そしてこちらのお宅はガイドの正木さんのご自宅。中は博物館のようにはなっておらず、あくまでご自宅なのでお仏壇もあれば、炊飯器もあります。
“Udatsu” is the plastered small wall between the roofs of the first and second floors of these houses and separates them from neighboring houses. They were made to prevent the spread of fire and decorated to show off the wealth of the family. This is the private house of my guide, Mrs. Masaki. The inside is not like a museum, it is her home, so there is a Buddhist altar and a rice cooker they use.
ガイドしていただいたあとは、正木家が代々営む酒屋さんで冷たいお茶を飲みながら、文化庁指定の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に暮らすひとびとの誇りと苦労をお聞きしました。このうだつの町並みは端から端までさっと歩いて写真を撮るだけなら15分ぐらいでしょう。しかしぜひ、そこに暮らす人々のガイドで2時間ぐらいかけて巡ることをおすすめします。正木さん、ありがとうございました。
After the private guided tour, she welcomed me at the liquor store run by her family for generations and I listened to the pride and difficulties to live in the Preservation District for traditional buildings. It would take only 15 minutes to walk and take pictures in the area. However, I recommend spending two hours walking around with a local guide. Thank you very much, Mrs. Masaki.
さて、かずら橋にはふたつあります。祖谷のかずら橋と奥祖谷二重かずら橋。今回、行ったことのなかった奥祖谷二重かずら橋に向けて、剣山の麓につながる国道438号を走りました。結果的にはこのルートが今回のツーリングで、文字どおりの「山場」でした。道中「第1ヘアーピン」から始まる、ヘアピンカーブをカウントする看板も現れるルートで、走りごたえのある立派な「酷道」です。道も細いのでバイクならまだ良くて、ミニバンや、運転に慣れていないドライバーだと離合に苦労しそう。国道438から国道439（ヨサク）に移ってまもなく、奥祖谷二重かずら橋に到着です。めっちゃ遠いですが、秘境感は申し分なく、私は好きですね。ぜひ次回は、ゆっくりしたいスポットです。
Now, there are two vine bridges in Iya: the (single) Vine Bridge (Kazurabashi) in Iya and the Double Vine Bridge (Niju Kazurabashi) in Oku-Iya. I rode along National Route 438 leading to the foot of Mt. Tsurugi. This road was narrow and had many hairpin curves, so it was the toughest in my touring. Shortly after switching from Route 438 to Route 439, I arrived at the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge. It’s very far away, but I loved the quiet atmosphere in the secluded nature.
さらに国道439号を下ると、祖谷のかずら橋を通過します。奥祖谷二重かずら橋からやって来ると、祖谷のかずら橋には巨大な駐車場や土産店もあって、ずいぶんと都会に見えてしまいます。ところで、この祖谷のかずら橋に路線バスでアクセスする場合は、「かずら橋」と「かずら橋夢舞台」というふたつのバス停があって、注意が必要です。行きはいいとして、帰りのバスがどちらのバス停から出るのかを前もって確認しておかないと、案外離れていて、逃すと本数も少ないので大変なことになります。
Going down Route 439, I passed the (single) Vine Bridge in Iya. When I saw it with a big parking lot and souvenir shop after the Double Vine Bridge, it looked like a big city.
国道32号を南下して高知県に入り1泊目のお宿、かつおゲストハウスに到着です。写真がいきなり、トイレで大変恐縮なのですが、このトイレのタイル床の遊び心こそが、かつおさんだなあと感心して思わず撮った1枚です。あちこちにカツオ、太平洋、坂本龍馬を連想させる遊びがあって、私の好きなゲストハウスです。
Heading south on National Route 32 to Kochi Prefecture and arrived at Katsuo Guest House. Look at the tiled floor of their toilet. I like their senses of fun, which remind bonito, the Pacific Ocean, and Ryoma SAKAMOTO.
子ども用の秘密の部屋もありますし、夜の団らんもあります。とにかく楽しいゲストハウスです。
There is also a secret base for kids, and adult guests can enjoy an evening talking.
