満潮、もしくは干潮時刻に大きなうず潮が見られます。これは、満潮時に太平洋から瀬戸内海へと海水が流れ込み、干潮時に瀬戸内海から太平洋へと海水が流れ出る際、狭くなった鳴門海峡を大量の海水が流れて渦が巻くからです。なので、満潮と干潮のちょうど間の時間帯だと、太平洋と瀬戸内海との間で潮流が止まってしまって、渦は巻きません。潮見表を確認してみましょう。
また、大潮（満月、新月）であれば、月と地球と太陽が一直線に並んで潮の満ち引きが特に大きくなるため、うず潮も特大になります。
天気は関係ないので、雨でもうず潮は見られます。
Check the whirlpool timing
Large whirlpools can be observed at high tide or low tide. This occurs because, at high tide, seawater flows from the Pacific Ocean into the Seto Inland Sea, and at low tide, seawater flows out from the Seto Inland Sea back into the Pacific Ocean. As vast quantities of seawater flow through the narrow Naruto Channel during these times, it swirls into whirlpools. Therefore, during the period precisely between high tide and low tide, the tidal currents between the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea cease, and no whirlpools form. Please check the tide tables.
Moreover, during spring tides (full moon or new moon), when the moon, Earth and sun align in a straight line, the tidal range becomes exceptionally large, resulting in particularly massive whirlpools.
The weather does not affect this, so whirlpools can be seen even in the rain.
橋より観潮船
うず潮を橋の上から510円と安価で見られますが、2,000円を払って観潮船から見たほうが断然おすすめです。観潮船にも何種類かあって、その中でもおすすめなのはうずしお汽船です。うずしお汽船の観潮船は小型なので海面からの距離が近く、大迫力のうず潮を目の前で楽しむことができます。
乗船の事前予約はできません。
ちなみに、観潮船がうず潮に吸い込まれてしまうことはありませんので、ご安心を。
Take a small boat
Whilst the whirlpools can be viewed reasonably from the bridge for ¥510, paying ¥2,000 to see them from a tide-viewing boat is far more recommended. There are several types of boats, and among these, the Uzushio Kisen is highly recommended. The Uzushio Kisen’s boat is small, so they operate closer to the water surface, allowing you to enjoy the spectacular whirlpools right before your eyes.
Bookings are not accepted.
By the way, the whirlpool NEVER sucks the boat into the sea. Don’t worry😉
大塚国際美術館とセットで
うずしお汽船の観潮船に乗る港からの最寄りバス停「亀浦口」までは、JR鳴門駅から路線バスで20分かかります。JR鳴門線も路線バスも運行本数が少ないので、事前に時刻表を確認しておきましょう。
また、高松〜大塚国際美術館の間を直通の高速バスが1日2往復、運行しています。
- 高速バスで高松から美術館に直行して美術鑑賞。
- うずしおのいいタイミングになったところで、再入館に必要な手続きを取って館外へ。大塚国際美術館からうずしお汽船の乗り場までは500mなので徒歩圏内です。
- うずしおを楽しんだら、再び美術館へ徒歩で戻って再入館、美術鑑賞。この大塚国際美術館は地上、地下合わせて5階あって鑑賞ルートは4kmもあります。なので、一気に作品を鑑賞しようとすると正直、疲れてしまいます。途中でうずしおを見に行くのがちょうど、いい気分転換になりますよ。
- 夕方の直通高速バスで高松へ。
大塚国際美術館へは高松のほか、神戸、大阪、京都などからも直通バスが運行しています。あまり知られていませんが、おすすめのルートです。
Enjoy it together with the Otsuka Museum of Art
The nearest bus stop to the port where you board the Uzushio Kisen tide-viewing boat, “Kameuraguchi”, is a 20-minute journey by local bus from JR Naruto Station.
Also, a direct express bus operates between Takamatsu and the Otsuka Museum of Art twice daily.
- Take the express bus directly from Takamatsu to the museum, and enjoy their masterpieces.
- Once the whirlpool is at its peak, complete the necessary re-entry procedures and head outside the museum. The walk from the museum to the Uzushio Kisen’s port is just 500 metres, well within walking distance.
- After enjoying the whirlpool, walk back to the museum and re-enter to enjoy the masterpieces. This Otsuka Museum spans five floors above and below ground, with a viewing route extending over 4km. Frankly, attempting to see all the works in one go can be exhausting. Visiting the whirlpool midway makes for a perfect change of pace.
- Take the direct express bus to Takamatsu in the evening.Direct buses to the Otsuka Museum run not only from Takamatsu but also from Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, and other locations. It’s not widely known, but it’s a recommended route.
