このコロナ禍の影響をもろに受けながらも、おかげさまさまで、私は好きな仕事をやって、生きています。
そんなことを毎年、高松桜井高校の１年生を前に、お話しています。
In spite of the pandemic, thanks to all of you, I live and work as I like.
I give a lecture about that my way of life to students of Takamatsu Sakurai High School.
私は青年海外協力隊としてセネガルで２年間を過ごした経験があって、ときどき、講演の依頼を受けることがあるのですが、たいていは国際理解教育や、国際協力の体験談ということで話しています。
ところが、高松桜井高校からの講演依頼だけは異質でした。
I have spent two years as a volunteer in Senegal, and sometimes get a request for a lecture about that such as “international cooperation” or “international understanding”.
However, only the request from Takamatsu Sakurai High School was different.
「高校で学ぶことの意義について、社会人という立場で話してほしい」
“Please talk about the meaning of learning in high school from the standpoint of a working adult.”
７年前、こんな難題を持ちかけられて、何をどう話せばいいのかと、かなり悩みながら講演の準備をしました。
Seven years ago, this difficult request made me consider hard what to talk about and how to tell it to the fresh students.
それから毎年、少しずつ、伝え方や、伝えるメッセージを変えながら講演を繰り返し、昨日はマスク姿の２８１人を前に、話してきました。
講演の序盤で、「大学生のイメージ」について尋ねると、「大学生になりたい、ポジティブなイメージが強い」に大半の手が挙がったのに対して、「社会人のイメージ」について聞くと、「社会人にはなりたくない、ネガティブなイメージが強い」に大半の手が挙がりました。
私自身は、社会人として、機械工具の卸売企業、ホテル、ゲストハウスの仕事を経験しましたが、どれもイヤではなかったし、むしろ、好きなことをして生きてきたつもりです。
Since then, I have given the lecture every year while changing the message and how to convey it, and I spoke to 281 students in masks yesterday.
At the beginning of the lecture, when asked about the impression of a university student, most of the audience had “positive”. However, when asked about the working adult, they had a “negative” impression.
I have liked my work in a machine tool wholesale company, a hotel, and my own guesthouse.
「好きなことで、生きていく」

これが、今年の講演のタイトル。
今年も、多くの瞳はうつむかずに、私の方をまっすぐ向いて聴いてくれていました。
This was the title of the lecture this year.
Many eyes looked at me and listened carefully, this year too.
「社会人」がつまらないのではない。
どんな仕事をするのか、どう働くのか、どう生きるのか。
それは彼らが自分たちで決めていけばいいし、自分たちで決めていくしかない。
それが伝われば、いいなあと思います。
Working is not boring.
They can decide what kind of work do they do, how they work, how they live.
And they have to decide for themselves.
I hope my message reached the fresh high school students.
