A Happy New Year.
昨年の今ごろはまさか、2020年があんな年になるとはつゆ知らず。
瀬戸内国際芸術祭2019が幕を閉じて、えらく暇な冬ですねと、県内の宿泊事業者と話していました。
I could never imagine that 2020 would be such a shocking year at this time last year.
After the Setouchi Triennale 2019 closed, I was talking with the owners of other guest houses and hotels in Kagawa.
“It is a very quiet winter this year.”
この年末年始は感染拡大と、それに伴うGoToトラベルの一時停止も相まって、予約はほぼキャンセル。
と言っても、もともと、一日一組限定で予約を承っているので、大した件数もありませんが。
常連のご家族ひと組が年末年始を若葉屋で３連泊されただけ。
実家で過ごしたり、初詣に行ったりと、開業以来はじめての、ゆったりとしたお正月を過ごしております。
Due to the re-spread of COVID-19 and the suspension of the travel campaign, most of our reservations during the New Year’s holiday were canceled.
Only one of our regular guest families stayed at Wakabaya for three nights.
We spend a relaxing New Year for the first time since the opening of Wakabaya in 2014.
年末に、「ニューノーマル時代の観光のあり方」と題した観光セミナーを拝聴しました。
昨年の春ごろは、「アフターコロナを見据えて…」と、来年（2021年）ぐらいにはコロナ禍も終わるのではという淡い期待を込めた施策が聞かれました。
しかし最近では、コロナ禍がいつまで続くのか先が見通せず、特に、インバウンドの影響が大きい観光・宿泊業界に至っては、アフターコロナなどと言って、一時しのぎをやっている場合でもなくなってきています。
言われてきていたウィズ コロナを進化させ、もう、腹をくくって、ニューノーマルを見据えるべきというお話でした。
あまり聞き慣れないニューノーマルですが、実はコロナ禍以前にも、既にニューノーマルを我々は経験しています。
それは、9.11の連続テロ事件以降の、航空業界です。
あの9.11以降、機内の持ち込み制限が非常に厳しくなり、セキュリティチェックに要する時間も長くなりました。
当時はその変化による混乱があったものの、今となっては、空港には時間に余裕を持って着いておかねばならない、機内に刃物や100ml以上の液体は持ち込めないなど、ニューノーマル、すなわち、常識として定着しています。
At the end of the year, I listened to a tourism seminar entitled “Tourism in the New Normal”.
In the spring of last year, we used to hear the word “after-corona” with a faint expectation that the pandemic would be over around the next year (2021).
However, it is very uncertain how long the pandemic continues now, and the tourism industry can no longer be easygoing to make temporary measures while saying “after-corona”.
The speaker told us that we should prepare to target the “new normal”, not the “after-corona”.
“New-normal” seems a new word for us, but in fact, we have already experienced it before COVID-19.
We see it in the aviation industry since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Since 9/11, carry-on restrictions have become very strict and the security check has required more time.
These changes caused some confusion, but now we recognize that we have to arrive at the airport early, and we can not bring cutlery or liquids on board as “new normal”.
テロの脅威と違って、スペイン風邪やSARSも収束していったように、新型コロナウイルス感染症もいずれは世界的にも収束するのでしょうが、まだしばらくは続くように思います。
ゲストハウス若葉屋も、しばらくは一日一組限定の貸切宿として営業していきます。
幸い、固定費がほぼないので、赤字になることもなく、ご心配には及びません。
Unlike the threat of terrorism, the worldwide infection of COVID-19 will be hopefully over someday like the Spanish flu and SARS were also finally over, but it will probably continue for a while.
Wakabaya also continues to open as a private inn limited to one group per day.
Fortunately, we hardly get into the red because of the little fixed cost.
それに、昨年9月には我が家で3人目となる子、寿々子（すずこ）も生まれ、このゆったりとした働き方、暮らし方がある意味、若葉屋と我が家のニューノーマルとなっています。
Last September, our third child, the first daughter named “Suzuko” was born.
These not busy ways of working and living have become a new normal for Wakabaya and our family.
