3月20日からの3日間、若葉屋は通常営業をお休みして、私たち親子は小豆島で3日間開催されていたオリエンテーリング大会に出場してきました。
For three days from 20 March, Wakabaya was closed for regular business, and my sons and I took part in an orienteering competition held over three days on Shodoshima Island.
オリエンテーリングとは、地図と方位磁針だけを持って野山に入り、そこに設置されたポイントを順番どおりに回ってくる、そのタイムを競う北欧発祥のアウトドアスポーツです。
Orienteering is an outdoor timed race that originated in Scandinavia, in which participants venture into the mountains armed only with a map and a compass, and navigate to points set out along a course in the correct order.
私が大学生のときに打ち込んでいまして、ブログを読み返してみると9年前に久々に大会に出走していたようです。
I used to be really into it when I was at university, and looking back through my blog, it seems I took part in a competition for the first time in ages, nine years ago.
その後、長男・幸太郎と一緒に岡山や関西での大会に足を運び、一緒にコースを回りながらトレーニングしてきました。前回、初めて一人でコースを無事に完走できて、今回の小豆島での大会でもちゃんとひとりで完走できました。成績もなかなかよかったです。
I’ve been participating in competitions in Okayama and the Kansai region with our eldest son, Kotaro, and trained him by running the courses together. Last time, he completed the course on his own for the first time, and he did the same at this competition on Shodoshima. His result was good.
そして今年から、次男・喜一も地図が自分で読めるようになったうれしさから、オリエンテーリング大会に出走するようになりました。私と一緒に山に入って、地図と実際の地形をじっくりしっかり読み込んで自分で正しいコースを選べれるよう、練習しています。この岩陰のフラッグも、ちゃんと自分で見つけられました。
And this year, my second son, Kiichi, has started competing in orienteering races, driven by the joy of being able to read maps for himself. We go into the mountains together and practise so that he can carefully study the map and the actual terrain and choose the correct route on his own. He even managed to find this flag hidden behind the rock by himself.
実は大会期間中、若葉屋では大会の参加者に限って宿泊をお受けしていました。その中に高校生オリエンティアがいました。しかも、日本オリエンテーリング協会指定の強化選手! 幸太郎と喜一はこの「速いお兄さん」と一緒に、自分たちのレースのふり返りをしてもらいました。また逆に、お兄さんが走った上級者コースも見せてもらって、僕たちならどういうコースを選ぶかなどと話しているうちに、自分たちも上級者コースを走れるようになりたいという気持ちになってきました。オリエンテーリングはマイナースポーツなのでいつもお父さんと一緒にいるばかりで、切磋琢磨できる同世代がいないのがつらいところ。年が近くてハイレベルな先輩の机上レッスンを受けられたのは、貴重な経験です。
Actually, during the competition, Wakabaya only accepted bookings from participants. Among them was a high school orienteer, and he was designated an elite athlete by the Japan Orienteering Association! Kotaro and Kiichi asked this ‘fast big brother’ to review their race together. Conversely, he also showed them the advanced course he had run. As they discussed which route they might have chosen themselves, they began to feel a growing desire to be able to tackle the advanced course one day. As orienteering is a niche sport, they are usually only ever with their father, and it is hard not to have peers of a similar age to compete and learn from. Receiving theoretical instruction from a senior runner was a valuable experience for them.
次の日。セルフチェックアウト後のテーブルにはこれまたすてきなメッセージが残されていました。オリエンティアは熱い仲間意識でつながっています。またどこかのテレイン（オリエンテーリング会場）でお会いしましょう。
The next day. After he’d checked out, we found a lovely message waiting on the table. Orienteering athletes are bound together by a strong sense of camaraderie. Let’s meet again at an orienteering terrain somewhere.
