Five Mountains Trekking

Local Info.

Our guests visit here for various purposes each.
Udon noodle, contemporary art, architecture, cycling, motorbike ride, pilgrimage – お遍路 ohenro, play with children, island, craft, bonsai, hot spring, shopping, and so on.
Moreover, hiking.

We often introduce our symbolic mountain in Takamatsu, Yashima.
It’s the starting point for hiking is easy to get from the train station.
On the top, there is the 84th pilgrim temple and can see the great landscape of the Seto Inland Sea.
On the foot, an open-air museum of folk houses “Shikoku Mura”, udon place “Waraya” and chicken restaurant “Ikkaku”.
Yashima fascinates a lot however, the hiking takes only 30 minutes for one way and it might be short for some hikers.

Therefore, we started to introduce “Five Mountains – 五岳山 Gogakuzan” in Zentsuji last year.
However, at first, I must try hiking on my own foot!

09:10

First of all, I must take breakfast.
I tried this udon place in the mountain but famous for the first time.
Delicious!

09:43

I can eat more!
Next is this local grocery shop.
Surprisingly, they also serve good udon.
Delicious again!

10:30

I parked a car and prayed at the 75th pilgrim temple “Zentsuji – 善通寺”.

10:38

I started the five mountains hiking at last with checking the route at the starting point for the first mountain, Mt.Koshikizan –

10:46

I could see the beautiful view of Zentsuji Temple and Mt.Iinoyama on the path.

10:55

I reached the summit of Mt.Koshikizan easily in 20 minutes.

11:09

I got down from Mt.Koshizan and entered to the path again for the second mountain, Mt. Fudenoyama –

11:10

However, winter hiking without undergrowth, mosquito, and spider’s web is easy, difficult to find path covered with many fallen leaves.
Especially, the route for Mt. Fudenoyama along stream needs much attention.

11:17

The fork.
I should show our international guests some kanji – 漢字 for “summit – 頂上” and names of mountain in advance.

11:28

These columnar joints may satisfy geologists.

11:32

I reached the second summit, Mt. Fudenoyama.
While walking, it got so hot even in January.
We can see great view of the next destination, Mt. Gahaishisan – 我拝師山 from here.

11:55

I got down again along the ridge and aimed for the third mountain.

12:37

Not only the wooden guide plate but also these red tapes for the guide are very helpful.

12:42

I cleared the third mountain, Mt. Gahaishisan.
Though it is the highest in the five mountains, its path was easy to find and walk.

12:55

The climax of this five-mountains hiking should be the rocky path between Mt. Gahaishisan and the fourth, Mt. Nakayama – 中山.
Hikers get down or up with rope and chain on the rock.
This area is legendary and religious for that Buddhism monk “Kukai – 空海” threw himself for pray, however, we should never lose our footing here.

13:17

I reached the fourth, Mt. Nakayama.

13:33

I walked along a gradual ridge.

13:40

I finished the last fifth summit, Mt. Hiageyama –
Unfortunately, we can’t see the view well.

13:44

But this superb landscape was prepared on the way down!
Seto Inland Sea area here has a much clear sky in the winter.

14:14

After 3 hours and a half hiking, I found a “Tossaka Manju” place – 鳥坂饅頭 Japanese bun stuffed with sweet red bean paste.
Two sweat and warm manju satisfied my tired body.

15:00

Another attraction of this Five-Mountains hiking is the partial pilgrimage on the way back to Zentsuji Temple.
Even after good hiking, just walking back on the road is quite boring.
After the manju place, walked the 72nd Mandaraji Temple – 曼荼羅寺, 73rd Shusshakaji Temple – 出釈迦寺, 74th Koyamaji Temple – 甲山寺 and 75th Zentsuji Temple 善通寺.
If you have more time, continue to 76th Konzoji Temple –

15:19

When you find this red arrow on the way in Shikoku, that is a way for the pilgrim.

15:27

If you walk with much attention for that red arrow and this stone post, the map is not necessary often.

15:48

I came back to the car parking at Zentsuji.
This is the really recommendable one-day hiking with a short pilgrim walking course.
