Discover Mitoyo

Local Info.

I’ve noticed a little that Mitoyo 三豊 is getting fascinating people recently.
I joined a tourism seminar in Mitoyo city and Kan’onji city held by Kagawa Tourism Association last autumn.

Sit down on seaside seat in the train because the train bounding for Takuma 詫間 from Takamatsu 高松 runs along shoreline of Seto Inland Sea 瀬戸内海.

A legend boy, Urashima Taro on the turtle is designed on a manhole in Mitoyo.
It is said that Mitoyo is the scene of this old story.

This small boat takes us to Awashima Island

Awashima Island

You should go there.
Something funny.

Naoshima 直島 and Teshima 豊島 attract us with professional contemporary art.

On the other hand, Awashima attracts us with such easy art by local residents.

Another feature is this Missing Post Office, which opens only on 2nd & 4th Saturday.

Missing letters without address to be sent are delivered to this post office.
To the watch lost somewhere, to ex-boy/girlfriend, to dead mother, and so on…
Every letter is readable and if you feel that you’re the one who should receive it, you can take it out.

Awashima Marine Memorial, the former National Awashima Shipman School.
My favorite display there is a hand-drawing world map titled “Oversea Countries and Port Towns with Our Memories”.
Many grandpas walking slowly around this calm Awashima were, in reality, shipmen who sailed all over the world!
Their incredible memories are written on this map.

We came back from Awashima and went to Nio Town 仁尾町 to experience a guided tour held on every Saturday usually.
A local guide explains the history and old industry in Nio.
I love this!

Ito Bakery.
Delicious.

Sarushiya.
We ate hot fresh tempura, fried minced fish, and shrimp.
Delicious.

Chobei.
This picture tells you enough that this ramen was delicious, right?

We moved to Shonai Peninsula, Mt. Shiude with a full stomach.

Though I’ve not seen it yet, you can see the amazing sakura (cherry blossoms) view here in April with the sea and small islands on the back.

This beautiful sea view awaits you at the café in Mt. Shiude Remains Museum.

We entered Kan’onji 観音寺 from Mitoyo next and Kan’onji is famous for this huge sand coin.

There is a small lottery stand in a small town, Kan’onji.

Surprisingly, 8 hundred million JPY lottery prizes appeared at this stand twice!

You should not make light of this superstition of the sand coin.

We visited Honen-ike 豊稔池 Dam.
It was completed in 1930 and the oldest masonry multiple-arch dam in Japan.
Thanks to rain the day before, it was sluicing water.

I sometimes introduce this dam to our guest who goes to the west by car since this visit because I really liked this heritage dam.

Our last destination was this Chichibugahama Beach 父母が浜 in Nio Town 仁尾町.
Though we went there on weekdays and the tide was not low, there were such many people at this photogenic beach.
My grandmother was born in this Nio Town and has lived in Takamatsu since her marriage.
Nio people see this sunset daily.
Still, she says, “Sunset at Nio is beautiful”.
