ゲストハウス若葉屋はおかげさまで開業10周年を迎えましたが、あいかわらず改善したいところは尽きないもので。今年、2024年は主に外まわりの改良を進めています。
Guest House Wakabaya has celebrated its 10th anniversary thanks to all of you, but we always have much to improve on our service and facilities. This year, 2024, we are mainly working on improvements outside the house.
まずはシンボルツリーの植え替えです。
First, we replanted the symbolic tree.
昨年、百日紅（さるすべり）から馬酔木（あせび）に植え替えた若葉屋のシンボルツリーですが、なんと残念なことに、夏の強烈な西日に耐えられず、1年と経たずに枯れてしまいました。
Last year, our symbol tree was replaced by Japanese andromeda from crape myrtle, but unfortunately, it died due to the intense afternoon sun in summer.
3代目シンボルツリーはヒメシャリンバイです。庭師さんたちが迷いなく樹形を整えてくれます。
Our third symbol tree is Sharimbai (Rhaphiolepis umbellata). The gardeners shaped it quickly.
冬でも落葉せず、枝は伸びすぎず、害虫もつきにくく、日差しにも耐えられて、初夏に小さい白い花が満開になりました。
It is resistant to pests, tolerates the intense sun, doesn’t defoliate in winter, and branches don’t overgrow. And small white flowers were in full bloom in early summer.
次は玄関、駐輪場周辺の蚊問題です。夏になると雨水枡から蚊がわんさかとわいて困っていました。そこで、「蚊シャットくん」という商品名のステンレス製の網を雨水枡のふたに敷き込みました。これが効果てきめん！今年の夏は蚊が少なくなりました。
Next is the mosquito problem around the entrance and bicycle parking. We had trouble with mosquitoes breeding a lot in the catch basins in summer. So, we put stainless steel nets over the basins. They work very well! This summer there are fewer mosquitoes.
地味な改善は続きます。駐車場の量水メーターのふたを、樹脂製から鋼板製に替えました。車の重みで割れかかっていた樹脂製のふたに、お客さんのトラックのタイヤが落ちかけるということがありまして、それで設備屋さんに製作してもらいました。これで安心。
Our small improvements continue. The water meter lids in the parking lot were replaced with a steel plate instead of a plastic one. The weight of the cars almost cracked the plastic lids. So, we had an engineer fabricate steel ones. Now it is safe.
塗装もやっています。私が自分でこの看板を塗ったのは6年前。日差しに当たって色褪せてきていたので、塗り直しました。
I also do painting. I painted this signboard myself 6 years ago. It had faded in the sun, so I repainted it.
我ながらうまくできたと思っているのですが、こういう作業をするときにいつもBEFORE写真を撮り忘れるので、比較できません。
I think I did a good job, but I always forget to take before pictures at improvement works, so I can’t compare.
開業10年目にして、ついに、コイン式衣類乾燥機を設置しました。これまで、多くのお客さんから「乾燥機があれば生乾きの心配なく洗濯ができるのに」というお言葉をいただいていました。屋内ではスペースや使用時の騒音の問題があるので、屋外の駐輪場の一角に設置です。大工さん手作りの台でちょうどいい高さに調整して、小屋根で雨を防ぎます。ちなみに、この台と駐輪場の壁も自分で塗りました。塗装も慣れました。
In our 10th year of business, we finally installed a coin-operated clothes dryer. Many of our guests had wished to use a dryer so they could wash without worrying about their laundry getting mildewy. Since there are problems with space and noise when using a dryer indoors, we installed it outdoors in a corner of the bicycle parking lot. The height is adjusted with a handmade stand, and a small roof protects it from rain. By the way, I painted this stand and the walls of the bicycle parking lot by myself. I got used to painting.
大工さんにはもうひとつ、工事を進めてもらっています。ここに屋根がつきます。開業当初、ここは物干し場ぐらいのつもりでしかなかったのですが、道路から一直線で入れるこのスペースは、大型バイクの駐輪場として使われるようになったのです。昨年も30台以上のバイクが若葉屋に来ています。それに、手狭に駐輪場から自転車も一部、こちらに移す計画です。屋根ができれば、バイクも自転車も洗濯物も雨に濡れる心配はありません。
The carpenters are working on one more project. A roof will be added here. When we first opened, this space was only intended to be a place for drying clothes, but this space, which can be entered straight from the street, is now used as a parking lot for large motorcycles. Last year, more than 30 motorcycles were parked here. Besides, we plan to move some bicycles from the cramped bicycle parking lot to this area. Once the roof is in place, there will be no need to worry about bikes, bicycles, or laundry getting wet from the rain.
改善は尽きません。
Improvement is endless.
